an  HS  School.  To  hav e  access  to

the  world  of  higher  education  the

initiative  for   establishing  a college

was  undertaken  by  the  local  people  in  the  late  1960s. After years of

struggle  the   college   ultimately   saw  the  light  of   the  day   on   26th

September   1987  in  a  vast   land   of   five   akars   donated     by   Mrs.

Renubal Devi  of  Mankar. A  large  number  people  of  this locality  and

surroundings  have  directly  extended their  help for  the   benefit  of  the

college. Beside  this Bireswar Banerjee  &  brothers,  the son’s  of  Late

Sushil  Banerjee,     Mr.Gurudas  Banerjee   and    some   other   persons

interested   in  education  and  development  of  the  locality  have   kindly

agreed  to   donate  land.    The   journey    began  with  six  Arts  subjects

and  sixty  three  students  and  a  thatched  roofed  mud-walled  hut. Less

than two  decades  later  the  college  proudly  offers  all  three  streams –

Arts,  Commerce and Science with  over  sixty  combinations.  There  are

almost  four hundred  students in First Year Arts  alone.   Huge  buildings

have   been   constructed   in  a  spacious  campus.   In  spite  of  the  sea

change in the appearance of  the  college  the  results  of  the  children  in

the  University Examinations  have  remained  unchanged.  The  success

rate  over  the years has  remained  uniformly  outstanding,   almost  one

hundred percent on an average.   By virtue of its students,   non-teaching

members  of  the  staff   and   the  teachers  Mankar   College  is   today

recognized as  one  of the  best  colleges  of  the  University  of  Burdwan.

The atmosphere here is calm and quiet, traditional yet modern, ideal for the pursuit of knowledge. Recently Mrs. Kanaklata Banerjee and Mr.Soumitra Mukherjee have donated 75 decimal of land including a house to the college for starting a girls hostel.
